En el soberbio mar se vio metido
Leandro y de sus ondas trastornado,
y menos del temor de muerte helado,
que del fuego de amores encendido.
Quedando congojoso, y oprimido,
de aliento y fuerza ya desamparado
de aquel estorbo sólo desmayado
muy más que de su muerte entristecido.
Habló de esta manera, mas fue en vano,
echando el alma no el postrer acento
con una voz cansada, y dolorida:
«¡O riguroso mar, o airado viento
dejarme a donde voy el llegar sano,
y luego me ahogáis a la venida!»
