Aquel rayo de Marte acelerado,
que domó tantas gentes extranjeras,
y volvió contra Roma las banderas
que Roma contra Francia le había dado;

en el corriente Rubicón parado,
revolviendo las cosas venideras,
detuvo el curso de sus huestes fieras,
del mismo caso que emprendió forzado.

Determinado, al fin, de ir adelante,
«Vamos, dijo, que echada está la suerte;
cuantas dudas se ofrezcan atropello».

Y resuelto una vez, como constante,
no quiso menos que victoria o muerte:
Así dudé, y así pienso yo hacello.
