Llegó a Guadalajara en este punto,
Marqués, donde el clamor de los metales
piadosos y las hachas funerales
lloran a un duque y lo celebran junto.

Al hijo de mis huéspedes difunto
saca también la cruz de sus umbrales;
que un médico, sin máquinas murales,
es aquí otro Aníbal contra Sagunto.

Es mi cochero músico y poeta;
mas, tal cual es, mirando bien la suerte
de dos tan desiguales ataúdes,

ahora está clamando, y dice: «¡Oh muerte!
Oh mazo de batán, que así sacudes
el paño fino como la bayeta!».
