Mas embravezco al mar, mas inquietos
pruebo los vientos cuanto más envío
voces al cielo, y al lamento mío
responde con más ásperos efetos;

mas si llevo estos ídolos secretos,
¿por qué lo espero favorable y pío?
¿guardo, Filis, tus prendas y porfío
a pedir paz con votos imperfetos?

Osemos pues; ¿qué tiemblas, mano? Intenta
ardan las adoradas hebras de oro,
su imagen y estas letras de su dueño;

que así ronco el piloto en la tormenta,
arroja al mar las perlas y el tesoro
para librar el combatido leño.
