Ni soles, oh tahúr, luna sin auroras
te han visto soñolientas las pestañas;
tu estado espira, al sucesor engañas,
pues tu fe y su esperanza le empeoras.

Tu abuelo en esas tenebrosas horas
que velas tú, jugando sus hazañas,
armado, por difíciles montañas
pasaba sus escuadras vencedoras.

Sabe que la nobleza es sucesiva
más por nuestra opinión que por su efeto,
y sin virtudes nunca meritoria.

¿Qué acuerdo tomas pues, oh indigno nieto,
sabiendo que es ajena aquella gloria
que del valor ajeno se deriva?
