El nombre, oh Cintia, que en el tiempo dura,
que estima jaspes y epitafios ama,
adoraréle yo en mi sacra llama
cobra esplendor para la edad futura;

que ya, sin esperar mi sepultura,
con opinión anticipada fama
a la prudente sencillez inflama,
¿quién sabe si a la horrenda envidia apura?

Trocadas pues las veces en mi suerte,
a mis posteridades sobrevivo.
Mas si en tu aprobación no me renuevo,

del culto de las artes ¿qué recibo?
a la naturaleza ¿qué le debo?
¿qué importan las promesas de la muerte?
