No con el vulgo acuses, oh Licino,
la providencia del mayor piloto,
pues no eres tú quien de un esquife roto
a nado se libró en las rocas de Ino.

Mejor será que al movedor divino
votos envíes; que un humilde voto
enfrena alguna vez al fiero Noto
y pone ley al ímpetu marino.

Tú, inexperto, de un débil vaso dueño,
en que crujen las tablas mal seguras
siempre que el lienzo tiendes en su antena,

¿de la fortuna pública murmuras?
¡Calla, y atiende junto de la arena
a conservar el casco de tu leño!
