Huésped mortal, si lloras la posada
antes de entrar en ella, mira, advierte,
que has de pagar la vista con la muerte
mejor a la salida que a la entrada.

La vida para hacer esta jornada
es el tesoro de tu archivo fuerte;
gástase poco a poco y se convierte
la paga en algo y la posada, en nada.

Caro albergue te da quien te condena
a vivir donde te será homicida
la que imaginas de virtudes llena.

Perdonarás en parte la venida,
pero nunca será posada buena
aquella que se paga con la vida.
