¿Qué incendio sin espíritu se sube
a la eminencia del discurso, cuando
ser presumí Lucero, derribando
el muro denso de esta hinchada nube?

¿En qué volcán me abraso si yo anduve
en mi primera edad siempre vagando
simples Regiones, dócil alentando
la infancia alegre que en mis años tuve?

¡Oh hidrópica ambición! Sin duda alguna,
tú eres la llama que me abrasa el pecho,
sedienta de los bienes de fortuna.

Déjame ya con el agravio hecho,
vuélveme a la inocencia de la cuna,
pues por hacerme grande me has desecho.
