Bildungsromankorpus

The Bildungsroman Corpus is a resource on German-language education and development novels published from the mid-18th century until the beginning of the 21st century. It includes metadata on 220 novels, as well as 126 full texts. The corpus was compiled based on secondary literature and incorporates the Backfischroman (or "teenage girl novel") genre a subcategory of the Bildungsroman. [mehr...]

Bildungsromankorpus

This is a collection of 126 full texts of Bildungsroman ('education novels' and 'development novels') published from 1749 to 1930, with one text published posthumously in 1967. The genre classifications were taken from the relevant secondary literature as listed in the metadata table. The corpus also includes five translations of texts that are considered fundamental to the development of the genre according to research. However, the corpus mainly contains (original) German-language Bildungsroman.

The metadata table contains the following information about the texts: file name (if full text is available), title, subtitle, author, date of first publication in the original language, date of first publication in German, genre classification (Bildungsroman/'education novel', Entwicklungsroman/'development novel', or Backfischroman/'teenage girl novel'), source of classification, gender of author (83 m, 43 f), gender of main character (80 m, 46 f), copyright status, full text (yes/no), and source of full text (if applicable).

All texts in the full-text corpus are in the public domain. The metadata table also contains information on texts that were still under copyright protection in Germany as of December 2024.

The normalized full texts were created using the German Text Archive's (DTA) Cascaded Analysis Broker (CAB) (Jurish, B. Finite-state Canonicalization Techniques for Historical German. Dissertation, Universität Potsdam, 2012 (Disputation 2011), urn:nbn:de:kobv:517-opus-55789).

We would also like to thank the German National Library, the Bavarian State Library and the Bielefeld University Library for providing some of the digital copies.
