En un sombrío valle despeinaban
sus muy rubios cabellos y escogidos
muchas pastoras que con mil gemidos
una zagala muerta lamentaban.
Pidióles un pastor por qué lloraban,
ellas con sus acentos doloridos
ser muerta de amores encendidos
Selvagia la pastora publicaban.
Rióse entonces él del devaneo,
y dijo como en burla: «¡O caso fuerte!»
¿y quién vio a una mujer morir de amores?
Mas si de eso murió, lo que no creo,
no la debéis llorar, pues que su muerte
halló reparo y fin a sus dolores.»
