Tiempo fue cuando yo, como en Egipto,
un cabrón adoraba, o un becerro,
un lobo, un cocodrilo, un medio perro,
o algún parto más fiero y exquisito.

Por huir el lugar, después maldito,
escogí voluntario mi destierro,
consumiendo con llamas o con hierro
cualquier memoria del infame rito.

Y de la luz divina, que contemplo
(de quien un vil temor privarme pudo,
haciéndome cobarde siervo oculto),

de tal manera ya visito el templo,
que ofreceré mi pecho al hierro agudo
por defender sus aras y su culto.
