Si de la libertad desposeído
estoy y formo voz, ¿cómo lamento
suspiros que se quedan en el viento,
pesares que no llegan al oído?

Quien su patria perdió, tiene perdido
el que juzga tener entendimiento;
que el que vive sujeto al sentimiento
y no muere, carece de sentido.

Mas, ay, que como vive la esperanza
vecina del dolor, por consolarme
dice que tenga en ella confianza.

Pero mejor le fuera no engañarme
pues si me sale falsa su fianza,
ha de pagar la deuda con matarme.
